Omkar Nath Dhar, popular as Jeevan, was a stalwart of the Indian film industry. He is fondly remembered for his contribution to Indian cinema. He was born on 24th October 1915 in Srinagar into a large family. He had 23 siblings and was the youngest of them all. Jeevan’s father was the Governor of Gilgit, and his mother was a home maker.  He too was blessed with two sons – Kiran Kumar, an actor himself, and Bhushan  Jeevan. Jeevan’s father passed away when he was just three, and his mother soon died in childbirth. He was studying BA in Kashmir and had plans of opening a photo studio later after completing his education, but his life was to change forever when he came to Bombay.

He had always been fascinated by the world of films. At the age of 16, with just Rs 26 in his pocket, he reached Bombay to work as a reflector boy in one of the studios. In a radio channel interview, Vividh Bharati, he remembers that he had come to Bombay to work behind the camera, but fate had other plans.  He chanced upon an audition for a movie to be directed by Mohan Sinha, where he recited a monologue from the Mahabharat and a couplet from the movie Heer Ranjha. The act ended in applause, and he landed his first film – Fashionable India (1936).
He is famous for the negative roles he played in a lot of films and for having portrayed the role of Narad Muni in about 60 films, which is more than any actor who has played the same role repeatedly. The audience would always await his arrival on screen as it promised ultimate drama.
Of the many movies he has done, the most memorable are Kanoon(1960), Tarana, Ghar Ki Izzat, Mela(1948), Anuradha(1940), Nagin, Taj, Nau Do Gyarah(1957); the list is endless. He had also worked in numerous Punjabi, Bhojpuri, and Gujarati films.

He took his profession very seriously and dedicated his whole life to it. According to his son, Kiran Kumar, Jeevan had two principles when it came to movies – first, always offer your seat first to the director and then the cameraman; and second, no matter what, the villain always has to make the hero look like Superman.
Jeevan was a man who lived life to the fullest and had many hobbies. He loved to go hunting and would take his sons along as well. He often travelled, one of his favourite destinations being London. He was a passionate drinker and also liked to gamble. Despite such lavish interests, he was a homely guy for whom family and work were everything.

He was a brilliant actor on-screen and lived like one off-screen as well. He spoke fondly of all his co-stars and said that they were all like one big family.
