Sharadchandra Arolkar highly and respectfully known as Pandit Sharadchandra Arolkar of Gwalior Gharana was born in the year 1912 in Karachi. He then later however ran from his home and moved to Gwalior. He is well known for his presentation of Tappa’s and how he mastered the differentiation between two rhythmic cycles: Theka and Taal which when precisely divided leads to a musical melody.
He practiced under the guidance of his uncle Pandit Eknath Pandit, Pandit Krishnarao Shankar Pandit, and Pandit Krishnarao Mulay. However, he also traces his lineage back to Sadarang and Adarang who shaped the Khayal style of Hindustani music in the 18th century. Blessed with highly talented gurus and with his hard work Pt. Arolkar created his style of music and melody despite his battles within. He self-composed 350 themes and 600 bandishes along with classical dhrupad, thumri, dadra, and khayal.
Kafi-Tappa, Raja Kamod (Teental and Tilwada tala), Sindhu-Bhairawi Thumri, and Khamaj-Dadra are some of the famous works of Pt. Arolkar.
