Rajendra Krishan

Rajendra Krishan (also spelled as Rajinder Krishan) was an Indian lyricist, poet and screenwriter. He was born on 6th of June in the year 1919 in Jalalpur Jattan,in Gujrat district then part of British India (now a part of Pakistan). He died at the age of 68 on 23rd of September in the year 1987. He is known for his poems and lyrics for multiple Indian cinema songs and scripts for various flicks. He started developing a knack for poetry at an early age of 12. In his early life, he took up a job of a clerk in a municipal office in the town of Shimla. He worked there till 1942. During this phase, he did a vigorous reading of books written by both Indian and Western authors. He continued to write poetry.

He has always expressed his gratitude to Urdu poets, Ahsan Danish and Firaq Gorakhpuri along with Hindi poets, Nirala and Pant. These four were his inspiration and helped him follow his passions. In those days, local newspapers in North Delhi held poetry competitions on the day of Krishna Janamashtmi in which he participated every year. In the 1940s, Krishan moved to Mumbai to become a screenwriter. In 1947, he wrote his first screenplay – Janta. He also gave the lyrics to the songs of the movie Zanjeer, in the same year. His first noteworthy work was his words as the script as well as the lyrics for ‘Aaj Ki Raat’ in 1948 which casts stars like Motilal and Suraiya. Following the assassination of ‘The Father of India' – Mahatma Gandhi, Krishan wrote a song called “Suno Suno Aye Duniyawalon.”

His films Lahore and Badi Behen, both of which were released in the year 1948 were great hits and brought more success to Krishan. Rajendra was fluent in Tamil and hence, wrote about 18 scripts for the famous AVM Studio films. Krishan is well-known for his collaborations with the composers C. These are just some of other great musicians that Krishan worked with. He passed away on his 69th birthday in his house in Mumbai. It is said that following his death, HMV bought out an LP containing 12 songs by Krishan.
