Prem Dhawan is a music composer in the Indian film industry. He has predominantly worked as a lyricist and choreographer too. His name became a legacy in the history of music in the world of cinema. The artist was born in the year 1923 and hailed from Ambala in Haryana. He completed his college from Lahore where he was a participant of the communist party of India. The streak of a rebel was visible in him from the early times of his childhood. He started his journey as an assistant to Khwaja Khurshid Anwar in the film ‘Aaj or Kal’ released in the year 1946 where he got a firm grasp on the technicalities of music in the film. He also joined the ‘Indian people’s theatre association’ to learn the nuances of classical music and acting for stage and screen.

The lyricist trained under Shri Ravi Shankar and acquired the magic of music from him. He worked in the movie ‘Dharti Ke Laal’ as a lyricist in the year 1946 and acted in the film ‘Lajawab’ in the year 1950. The movie ‘Goonj uthi sehnai’ was another feather in his cap where he acted beautifully and stole the heart of the audiences with his acting. Prem Ji received the great honor of Padma Shree award in the year 1970 by the Government of India. He also got the National film award for the best lyrics in 1971. He took the Indian music industry to new heights with his invaluable contributions He made his debut in the field of choreography in the film Vachan which wasn’t a huge success but opened up a lot of ways for the artist.

The prodigy worked in more than hundreds of films in his life span and died on 7th May 2001 due to Cardiac arrest. His choreography career had the movies like Waqt, Dhool ke Phool, Sahara, Do bigha Zameen, Arzoo, Naya daur, Do Phool, and Vachan in the list.
