He was assisting director Mahesh Bhatt when the latter was writing the screenplay of HamariAdhuri Kahani. Mahesh knew Karan wanted to be a director, and he saw that potential in him. He approached Karan and asked him to direct the story of Khamoshiyan in 2015. In an interview, Karan mentioned that Mahesh Bhatt used to slap and scream at him if he made a mistake while directing a scene.

The movie received mixed reviews from the public. Karan Darra announced that his next film based on underground party culture titled, Disco 82 but because of financial constraints, the movie put on hold. Karan Darra released two short films titled Anpadh (2017) and Hungry Dogs (2018) on YouTube.
