Ekta Mittal is Indian Filmmaker, writer, and screenwriter based in Bangalore. She is credited with the script writing, direction and production of Birha, an exemplary documentary piece based on the lives of migrant workers. She was inspired to create Birha while working on Behind the Tin Sheets, a collaborative film project (2009), and it is the continuation of the same. It was screened at the Dharamshala International Film Festival. It was also nominated at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival for Best Documentary award in 2019. She co-founded Maara, a media and arts collective, based in Bangalore, India, in 2008.
From showcasing several independent productions to working in collaboration with various artists, Ekta has left no stone unturned. She has been making films since 2019 which mainly deal with topics like labor, migration, gender, and caste in rural and urban contexts. Her other works include several documentaries and short films like In_transience (2011), Presence (2012), Distance (won best short film at Lok Leipzig, 2014), and Gumnam Din (Missing Days) (2019). Gumnam Din screened at the Berlinale Short V Program.
