However, the case didn’t end up in his favor as the court dismissed his pleas of copyright infringement. Talking about his personal life, he was born on 9 March 1977 in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand) and was brought up in Kolkata (West Bengal). He then shifted to Bhilaiborn (Chhattisgarh) and then to Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) and finally Faridkot (Punjab). Lama completed Mechanical Engineering and received his diploma in 1996–97. Lama's father was in CISF, who retired a few years ago and mother is a housewife.

He does not have any sibling and he did his schooling in different cities at different points in time because his father’s jobs were of transferable nature. One can say that the taste of the various places he has shifted to at the time of his schooling is reflected in his movies. His movies have a unique blend of different styles and accents. His ambition was to be an Army officer, but ending up being a film director is still a mystery in the eyes of the public for the reasons best known to him.

He got his first chance in the business of films and television in 1998 by assisting in Ad films Pillsbury Wheat Flour, Camlin and more.
