PL Raj was born on August 10, 1934, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, as Devraj Peter Lewis. He was a renowned Hindi cinema choreographer. He was married to Devyani. He had two daughters, Eliza and Greta, and a son, Lesle. He began his career in Bollywood in his early 50s. He initially worked as a background dancer, and later assisted Krishna Kumar as an assistant choreographer in 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu' picturised on Helen. His first choreography as an independent choreographer was for the movie Love Marriage.

He has choreographed some of the popular dance hits "Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera," "Dafliwale Dafli Baja," "Salaam E-Ishq," "Jaane Do Naa," "Deewana Mujhsa Nahi," "O Haseena Zulfowali," "Mungda," "Mehbooba Mehbooba," "Khaike Pan Banaraswala," and "Aa Jaane Jaan." He is the most successful choreographer of the 1960s-70s Hindi Cinema. His dance numbers made Helen a household name to whom he taught Bharatnatyam and Kathak dances. He has choreographed over 1,000 films in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, and Telugu.  At the age of sixty-seven, he died on July 9, 2002, at his Mumbai home, due to cardiac arrest.
