He was born on 5 July 1915, in a poor family in Baroda, Gujarat, and spent most of his childhood struggling to fulfill the basic needs of his family. When his parents could no longer afford to pay his monthly school fees, Rashid was compelled to quit school. Therefore, he started looking for any odd jobs that came his way to earn a livelihood. He also worked as a coolie to sustain a living.

Initially, Rashid Khan was interested in painting and did not have any intention to pursue acting as a professional career, however, his performance in a student play was widely appreciated by the audience and it immensely impressed Dr Ambala Patel of Sagar Movietone. Later, he offered Rashid a place at his production house, and Rashid politely declined because he had no experience of working in production. One day, he was introduced to a painter in Bombay who used to color sequences in film reels. Rashid was fascinated by his work and immediately picked up the skill and started painting reels by himself. Although Rashid loved painting film reels, but this job could not provide him with enough money to fulfill his family's needs, so he decided to work as a member of the production team at the All-India Radio office in Bombay. Later, he also got involved with the Indian People’s Theatre Association while working at the All India Radio.

Balraj Sahni, the popular director, writer, and actor returned from London and started looking for actors for his play Zubeida for IPTA. He met Rashid at India Coffee House and got engaged in a deep conversation with him. Sahni was convinced at his very first glance, that Rashid was the actor he had been looking for the job. At first, Rashid was reluctant to accept the acting offer because he did not want to leave a steady job at the radio, but he eventually agreed when Sahni requested him and accepted the offer just four days before the premiere of the show.

After that, IPTA decided to venture into the medium of cinema with its classic film Dharti Ke Lal in 1946 in which Rashid was offered the character of a priest who also teaches children in the village.  After the success of his play Zubeida, Rashid readily accepted the film and made his debut as an actor.
