Pandit Devabrata was an Indian musician specializing in playing the Sitar. He is considered as the Legend of Sitar in the Indian traditional music scene. Born on 30th May 1935, in Mymensingh, which is now in Bangladesh, he started playing Sitar at four years and performed at the All-India Radio at eighteen. Pt. Chaudhuri received training from Sitar Maestros like Panchu Gopal Datta and Mushtaq Ali Khan.
He studied at the University of Calcutta. In 1985, he became the Dean and Head of the Department of Music at Delhi University. Pt. Chaudhuri has a very overshadowing presence in the music world; he has created eight ragas, namely, Bisweswari, Palas-Sarang, Ashiqui Lalit, Swanandeswari, Kalyani Bilawal, Shivamanjari, and Prabhati Manjari. He wrote three books in the Indian Music genre- Sitar and Its Techniques, Music of India, and Indian Music. He was famous for using the 17-fret sitar instead of the standard 19 fret sitar most sitar players use. He has been honored with the Padma Bhushan and Padmashree.Â
The legendary musician died of a heart attack on 1 May 2021.
