Kolkata-born Indian artist Shipra Bhattacharya was born back in 1954. She completed her bachelor’s studies studying science at Calcutta University. Shipra also completed her studies learning art from Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. She spent her married life with another renowned artist named Subhaprasanna Bhattacharjee. Apart from being a painter like his wife, Subhaprasanna was an active member of the Calcutta Painters Group.
It was in 1981 when Shipra started to reveal her work to the world. Her brilliant works were exhibited at different exhibition locations throughout the country. The Tagore Art Gallery in Kolkata, the Habitat Center in Delhi, and at the Birla Academy of Art & Culture were some places where her art was exhibited. Her works were not limited not just within national boundaries but they were widely showcased at an international level as well.
In the initial phases, Shipra used traditional Indian techniques to design her art. For example, she used charcoal and tempera at that point of time but she later shifted to using oil on canvas. Bhattacharya’s art included a deep meaning depicting the experiences of middle-class women. Her works have been appreciated by critics because her talent showcased independent women. With such recognition, her art has been featured in many book covers. Shipra Bhattacharya along with her husband had established the Arts Acre. It is a museum that dedicates itself to the modern art of West Bengal. The motive to make such a move was to promote art and along with it support regional artists.
