Albeli is a Hindi television series that was released on the channel Zee TV. The series was a comedy serial that premiered on the 1st of January, 1993 and went on for around one year and ended in 1994. Albeli follows the story of a woman named Joohi. Joohi is a single mother with two teenage children. The first episode of the show gives us all the relevant information: we see that she is looking for a job to help them survive and that the children no longer have a father. Her children are incredibly supportive of their mother’s ambitions and interests. When Joohi loses the job that she interviewed for, we are introduced to a new character. The children call him uncle.
He brings Joohi a letter that informs her that she has been appointed as a manager in his office. The children and Joohi are overjoyed, and she starts her work immediately the next day. Joohi can essentially be seen as a character that produces the comic element through her exaggerated facial, verbal, and physical expressions and presence of mind. She constantly seems to do something wrong and annoy everyone around her, but they still love her. Occasionally, we see flashbacks of her and her husband. She is a Bengali and he was Punjabi.
We see how he proposed to her, how they spent their time together, went on treks, and enjoyed each other’s company. The show keeps showing us a parallel between the past and the present and keeps jumping back and forth between the comedy of the characters and the somberness of their past.
