Aaina Kabootri aired on Doordarshan National is one in a series of TV adaptations of short stories in Hindi. This particular story is a tragic tale about a woman caught between the affections of two men. The dueling passions ultimately lead to her painful death. Durgi, the protagonist, an innocent and very pious maiden from a mountain hamlet, is awaiting her wedding eagerly with a man she dearly loves. Her betrothed is a policeman who carries around his gun wherever he goes. However, soon a shadow drops over their serene relationship. A strange man wearing shabby clothes and having piercing eyes starts following her, much to her concern.
The sight of the man strikes up fear in her mind, but she keeps her thoughts to herself. And needless to say, the marriage between Durgi and the policeman takes place. Fast forward to some time, the couple embarks on a visit back to her village. En route they stop for a while to get some rest, a while after, Durgi’s husband leaves her to fetch some water. That is when a fateful encounter takes place between Durgi and her strange pursuer. He tells her that he has come to see her for one last time so that he may cherish her memories for the rest of his life. At that moment, her husband returns, and upon seeing this he assumes the worst and fires at them.
Cut to the next scene we see a crowd and in the midst a wounded Durgi struggling to breathe. The shot hit Durgi, and she is now nearing death. Meanwhile, her concerned relatives ask her distraught husband who shot her. Â Overcome with emotions he replies that they will know from Durgi herself. That is when; the stranger makes a dramatic entrance. He goes straight towards the policeman and as he approaches him the other ask him, what he wants. To this, he replies that he is the one who took Durgi away, and says that he has come to surrender.
