The story is from Chandi Mangal, a 16th century Bengali text that celebrates the victory of good over evil. The story takes place in a remote forest where a poor young tribal couple, Kalketu and Phullara, live a peaceful and simple life. Their lives turn upside down when Kalketu captures a golden chameleon and brings it back home. As Phullara is about to harm the creature, it transforms into the goddess Chandi. After witnessing her innocence, goddess Chandi grants them with immense wealth.

With this wealth, they made a township named Gujarat. It attracts the attention of the fraudster Bhandu Dutta, who disguises himself as an associate of Kalketu. Kalketu believes Bhandu but eventually becomes aware of his deceitful nature and has him removed from his court. Bhandu flees to Kalinga and manipulates the king to attack Gujarat. Kalketu is defeated and imprisoned, but due to the grace of Chandi, he overcomes all the troubles. After his passing, he goes to heaven.
