Plot
Years after being thrown out of his native home in Sri Lanka, Shivaji is looking for his adopted mother, from whom he was unfortunately separated. He meets Neelu in this quest, and the two instantly fall for each other.
Meanwhile, their fellow refugees are harassed by local goons Bajirao and Ras Bihari. Shivaji must not only deal with them, but his stepbrother, who hates him to the core, and is ready to join hands with Shivaji’s enemies. Will Shivaji be able to overcome the challenges in his path?
Star Performances
This film marks a crucial chapter in the acting career of Prabhas. Following a topsy-turvy ride into Telugu cinema, this film would be his moment of reckoning. His on-screen bonding with Bhanupriya is also endearing.
SS Rajamouli has bounced back into the game with a proper mass entertainer. With his father, Vijayendra Prasad for company, he has delivered a box office winner, just the way the audience wanted.
Analysis
When asked what he would do next, SS Rajamouli decided that he would make an action flick that is equally emotional in parts. He even described that he looks to ‘Scarface’ as an inspiration. However, a glance at ‘Chatrapathi,’ and you would understand that Rajamouli had something else in mind, and that too for the better.
To start with, this film sheds light on the troubles faced by immigrants, irrespective of class and creed. However, unlike ‘Scarface,’ ‘Chatrapathi’ focuses more on emotion than violence. The protagonist may not be a natural hero, but he is ready to become, one just so that he can reunite with the lady who is not even his mother!
Not every day do you see a power-packed, yet emotionally engaging entertainer in Telugu cinema. But SS Rajamouli is known for his knack for doing the unconventional. Prabhas has packed a solid punch as Shivaji, aka ‘Chatrapathi.’ His emotional bonding with Bhanupriya, who plays his adoptive mother, is endearing as well. The antagonist duo of Pradeep Rawat and Narendra Jha also mark their presence with their menacing presence.
There are not many flaws to talk about. However, if there are any, they are primarily related to the character development of both Shriya Saran and the antagonists. While the antagonist duo of Pradeep and Narendra give tough competition to Prabhas, the makers could have done without the ‘North Indian’ touch.

Verdict
‘Chatrapathi’ is a proper commercial entertainer the Telugu masses were pining for. Except for a few glitches, the narrative is endearing, and the action is equally power-packed. If you’re a fan of proper commercial masala, go for this one!
