Plot

Master Gregory manages to imprison a fierce witch, Mother Malkin. However, she escapes soon enough and wreaks havoc on the local citizens. Gregory finds out that the key to her downfall lies in Tom Ward, a farmer’s son. The seventh son of the seventh son, is Tom ready to accept his responsibilities? Can the two wizards bring down Mother Malkin, before she becomes invincible?

Star Performances

The acting performances more than salvage this film. Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges are the standout performers.

Contrary to most of the reviews, the CGI effects for this film are surprisingly decent, though not path-breaking by any standard.

Analysis

A ‘Harry Potter’ with a twist? Well, that’s what you might expect with the on-screen adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s fantasy novels. ‘Seventh Son’ is mind-boggling, yet entertaining enough to give the viewers something different.

Starring the likes of Jeff Bridges, and Julianne Moore, the film revolves around a novice wizard fulfilling his destiny. While this may remind you of the basic theme of ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Seventh Son’ is in no way identical to the world of JK Rowling.

However, is ‘Seventh Son’ enough? Yes and no. In terms of presentation, Sergei Bodrov and his team of writers have put up a decent act, powered by some good performances from Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. Oh, there’s Kit Harrington as well, if you know what his role in ‘Game of Thrones’ is!

However, the screenplay is not very tight, making room for many loopholes! In some places, the editing is also not up to the mark. However, contrary to most of the reviews, the special effects, especially the 3D integration are not as bad as claimed.

What's There?

  • A simple, engaging narrative
  • Decent production design
  • Brilliant performances from Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore

What's Not There?

  • Loopholes in the narrative
  • Clunky Editing
  • Rough integration of sequences

Verdict

‘Seventh Son’ is one film that not many will subscribe to. For classic fantasy film lovers, this may even appear ludicrous on the surface. However, if you’re someone who does not look for logic in fantasy, you can go for this film!
