Plot

"Mumbai Police" is the name given to a dynamic trio of three police officers and best friends in Ernakulam, Kerala, consisting of ACP Antony Moses or "Rascal", ACP Aryan John Jacob, and Commisioner Farhan Aman. When ACP Aryan gets killed by a sniper during an Awards Ceremony, ACP Antony takes it upon himself to find his killer. He does so, but before he can disclose the name to his friend Farhan, he suffers an accident that leads to partial memory loss.

The story revolves around how Antony, with the help of Farhan, begins to piece back his memory to resolve the case of the murder of his best friend. As the plot builds, we see elements of self-discovery, love, friendship, and even betrayal. You can find yourself rooting for Antony as he struggles with the case and with himself, his sexuality, his condition, and his life after the accident.

Star Performance

"Star-studded" would be an apt word to describe the cast of this film, which stars big names like Jayasurya and Prithviraj in the lead roles. While they do add credibility to the film, they also bring an intensity that is necessary for the plot.

As for Prithviraj, this is one of his best works so far. He brings a duality to the role of ACP Antony. On the one hand, he is violent, cheap, and a womanizer, a "rascal" in the true sense of the word. On the other hand, we see an earnestness within him as he works towards finding his best friend's murderer whilst simultaneously struggling with the changes in his life all at once. You can feel an almost reluctant relatability towards him.

Both Rahman and Jayasurya have showcased brilliant talent on screen. The cast, including the supporting actors, truly really takes this movie towards perfection. Hima Davis, the debutante in this film, has done promising work.

Analysis

Mumbai Police is a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first shot to the last one. The plot is complex but executed well, which makes it a hard one to dislike. Bobby-Sanjay have meticulously picked up every thread of the film and tied them down with conviction.

The cinematography is power-packed to match the theme of the film. R. Diwakaran and Mahesh Narayanan have delivered with visuals that complement the plot, and will make you feel like you are a part of a mystery that is unfolding all around you. Also, the background score Gopi Sundar by Gopi Sundar is the perfect accompniment to the film.

Mumbai Police comes under the neo-noir genre of films, which is already something the Malayalam film industry does well. It starts off seeming like a typical mystery-thriller-suspense-action film, but as it progresses we find out of the box elements that make the film unique and one of a kind. One standout feature of the film is the exploration of homosexuality and internalized homophobia in context to Antony character, a stark contrast to his "rascal-like" portrayal in the beginning of the film. It also manages to contradict sexual stereotypes in a delicate way.

The film is not at all a straightforward narrative, but director Rosshan Andrrews has taken great care to make it a well-executed one, and that can be seen throughout the course of the film. Unfortunately, it may sometimes get too fast, and hard to keep up with. Additionally, the dialogues could be better written.

What's There?

  • Very complex but intricate plot
  • Great acting by the actors

What's Not There?

  • Too fast at times
  • Dialogues are forgettable

Verdict

Mumbai Police is a story that will take aa hold of you fromt the very first scene and will not let go until the very end, where it will leave you with a sense of acceptance and contentment with the end. It is a film packed with everything from thrill to drama to great acting and even touching scenes that are sure to make you feel warm inside. A must watch, for sure.
