Plot:

Madanan Mallakkara is a simple man who paints chickens and sells them for a living. Circumstances compel him to stand as a dummy candidate against a powerful local politician. Will he accept things the way they are, or will this decision give him a purpose worth fighting?

Star Performances:

While this is the debut project of Sudeesh Gopinath, it doesn’t seem like one. The credit goes to Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , who is known for his dose of dark humor as a screenwriter cum filmmaker.

Babu Antony is typically known for action roles. However, in this movie, we witness his comical side. His deadpan expressions on some occasions, accompanied by a mischievous grin, only add to the wry humor of his character.

The same goes for the central character, played by award-winning actor Suraj Venjaramooodu. The way he essays the role of the simpleton Madanan, who is embroiled in a political slugfest is simply commendable. His chemistry with Bhama Arun is also equally impressive.

Analysis:

Imagine Peepli Live transported by some means to the quaint villages of Kerala. That, in a nutshell, is ‘Madanolsavam’. Though the storylines are different, the essence of political satire is all the same.

In satire, the most essential task is to keep the quality of humor intact while taking potshots at the establishment. On that note, this film scores full marks. This is less of politics and more of the hilarity involved in handling proxy candidates. The movie spares none, and that is the best part about the same.

Madanolsavam is the evolution of a common man who takes the very system into his hands once he realizes his true worth. The film also covers how something as awkward as bowel movements have a say in local elections, and the screenplay of Ratheesh Poduval makes it even more hilarious.

As Madanan Manjakkaran, Babu Antony’s role also is the perfect portrayal of the desperation that some candidates resort to just to secure the position of power. However, the USP of this movie is the witty screenplay penned by Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval, who is equally adept with direction and screenwriting. While the decision to give direction to a debutante might have raised some eyebrows, Ratheesh’s experiment did prove successful. This is a near-perfect blend of experience and raw talent since the movie is not entirely directed by Poduval.

What’s There?

• Satirical entertainment that does not bore you at all

• Earnest efforts from the lead pair of Suraj Venjaramoodu and Babu Antony

• Political potshots without being too preachy

• Outstanding performances from the supporting cast

What’s Not There?

• Minor flaws

Verdict:

‘Madanolsavam’ is a satirical take on local elections done right. The movie is not a lip service to anyone and the screenplay only proves why. With brilliant performances from Suraj Venjaramoodu and Babu Antony, ‘Madanolsavam’ is a satirical experience that should not be missed!
