Plot
A final-year law student Shiva is accused of rape and murder, a crime he has no idea of. Worse, the victim is the daughter of the home minister. Can Shiva provide his innocence before it's too late?
Star Performances
Gautham Basavaraju has done the tougher job of showing each aspect of justice through our legal system, without malice. Irrespective of the result, he must be commended for having the conviction to take the other path.
The ensemble cast did a great job as well. From Pawan Shankar as the main accused Shiva to the likes of Sahana Sudhakar, Bala Rajwadi, and HG Dattatreya, each actor played their role to near perfection.
Analysis
As someone rightly said, ‘justice delayed is justice denied.’ True, but what if things are not as simple as they seem?
‘Yathabhava’ is a courtroom drama that explores this very probability. It explores the other side of the law, especially when the accused may not be guilty, yet suffers the torture nonetheless.
Through the characters of Shiva and the victim’s father, the makers show without hesitation the side effects of the media trial, and how some people use it for their vested interests. We also witness how due to this very attitude, some people suffer needlessly, whether they were guilty of the offence in the first place. This is something that was initially touched upon in the 2019 Hindi film ‘Section 375’. ‘Yathabhava’ makes it more grounded and genuine in terms of approach.
The camerawork may not be out of the box, but the director more than compensates for it with a strong, effective narrative. The actors do a commendable job, Pawan Shankar and Bala Rajwadi’s performances make a mark of their own. Even the likes of Sahana Sudhakar and HG Dattatreya do complete justice with their respective performances.

Verdict
‘Yathabhava’ is a social drama that has its heart and soul in the right place. Writer cum director Gautham Basavaraju took up a rather bold theme for his screenplay and gave it its due. The acting performances only add to the cinematic brilliance of this socially important film. You should give this a try if you haven’t!
