Plot
Shankaranna is a well-wisher for his village. However, he cannot convince his only son Somu, to choose the right path. Shankaranna believes that one day Somu will learn his lesson until one event changes their lives forever.
Star Performances
Abhi Basavaraj has done a great job with the narrative. Despite the predictable tropes, he manages to make the film entertaining, as well as thought-provoking.
Girish Jatti and Shreshtha Basavaraj do full justice to the vision of the director. They almost carry the entire film on their shoulders.
Analysis
‘Somu Sound Engineer is not your typical drama. The film is about a father, who finds it hard to convince his ruffian son to change his ways until an event changes their lives forever.
The film may not be as grand as ‘Thevar Magan’, but it does make the audience think. The emotional struggles of Shankaranna, as portrayed by Girish Jatti, are something very few actors would dare to attempt.
Abhi Basavaraj excels in both the writing and the direction. There are no grand moments, no path-breaking action scenes, and certainly no over-the-top romantic angles. If ‘Vaastav’ had a practical and realistic cousin, ‘Somu Sound Engineer’ could be one.
The film is not completely flawless. There are a few glitches in terms of technicality and editing. However, the overall experience is not affected in any way. Abhi Basavaraj ensures that the narratives maintain the pace, and the viewers are engaged throughout. The visuals are just about okay. They’re neither too outstanding nor too underwhelming.
The acting performances are another plus point about this movie overall. As mentioned, Girish Jatti and Shreshtha Basavaraj do complete justice to the role of the father and the son. The supporting cast, including Nivishka Patil, have also done a decent job with their respective roles.

‘Somu Sound Engineer’ is a film which didn’t have much to offer. The social drama looked like just another average affair. However, the way director Abhi Basavaraj drove the narrative is surprisingly wonderful. The acting performances in this movie are the cherry on the icing, and the film is overall a good one time watch!
