Plot

Basavaraj Hadimani is a simple engineering student who aspires to migrate to the USA. However, he learns about his father's death. All his dreams have now come to an end.

Basavaraj returns to his village, only to learn that it is not only his family in trouble. He decides to bring transformation through the localization of agricultural sales, with a journalist and some friends by his side. Can Basava win against all odds?

Star Performances

For a debut directorial, Shrikant Katagi has done a brilliant job. Instead of another lecture nobody asked for, he has provided a credible solution for a problem.

As the lead protagonist, Naveen Shankar is making a name for himself. He has made continuous strides with each film. With 'Kshetrapathi', Naveen has just added another feather to his cap.

It is also great to see Archana Jois experiment with new roles, such as the one in this movie. Achyuth Kumar is just being what he is well known for an able actor in his own right.

Analysis

Agriculture is one of the principal pillars of any nation's economy, and our nation is no exception. As such, any problem with the farmers is bound to have its implications. Our cinema industry, irrespective of language, has covered this issue in its own sweet way. However, it either turns out to be a social drama like 'Mulshi Pattern' or a mockery of the subject like ' Satyamev Jayate 2 This show was an Aamir Khan show all the way. Boll >> Read More... '.

Kshetrapathi, however, chose none of the above. It creates its own path, it demands answers, and the makers are ready to do what few people would choose: provide solutions to problems. The notion of self-dependence, or what some popularly called Aatmnirbharta, is reflected well in this movie. The hero is not ready to defy conventions, he just wants credible change, even if it means taking the system all by himself.

The story does not meander and comes straight to the point within the first half itself. The film may be a bit melodramatic but the message of the story remains crystal clear. On that note, full marks to the director Shrikant Katagi for his focus on the problem at hand.

If the movie lacks something, it is some crisp editing. Despite being slightly longer than a runtime of 2 hours, the film seems slow in some sequences. The portrayal of some characters also feels forced and one-toned.

What's There?

  • Earnest writing by debut director Shrikant Katagi
  • Good performances from both Naveen Shankar and Archana Jois
  • Good camerawork from YVB Shivasagar

What's Not There?

  • Slightly melodramatic in tone
  • Some issues with editing
  • Incoherent integration of plot sequences

Verdict

'Kshetrapathi' is one of the few social dramas with its heart and soul in the right place. It might look melodramatic and raw for some, but the efforts are earnest. We hope that the pair of Srikant and Naveen continue to make such good films.
