Plot: The story is about Dugappa (Naveen Krishna) who has spent his childhood with a dream of independent India. He is the son of a freedom fighter. As he grows up, he forms a team with other freedom fighters to fight for independence, but his plans get awry as he gets arrested by an Indian police officer Vishakanthasamy (Suchendra Prasad), who serves Britishers. But Dugappa succeeds in escaping from the shackles of police and takes refuge at Grijalva’s (Shruti) home, unknown of the fact that she is the wife of the police officer who is behind him. Now what will happen when Dugappa and Vishakanthaswamy cross each other's path and will Dugappa succeed in achieving his dream of free India forms the rest of the story.
Analysis: S.Badrinath has done multitasking in '1944'. He is the cinematographer, writer, and director of the film. He has done justice to some roles but failed to leave an impact on the audience in few. His writing and script are extraordinary. The way he has adapted a play is commendable but his direction lacks. That’s the reason that even on 70 mm screen the flick seems like a skit and lacks the qualities of an entire movie. It’s just like he has failed to direct a good script and portrayed on the silver screen.
Similarly, the performance by actors is watchable, but their characters lack depth. You would feel like you are watching an old T.V drama which is far away from the realistic flavor. Production values of the film are great and well shot. But photography and the set up disappoint us to feel pre-independence area.
Star Performances: Actors have done well to lift the flick and take it until the end. Shruti and Suchendra Prasad have done a brilliant job and carried their characters with sheer dedication. But the dialogues given to them are below average and lack a realistic view. Naveen Krishna fits perfectly as Dugappa. Suchitra plays a police officer, and Shruti plays his wife. The real villain in '1944' is poor direction and dialogues. Director's intentions are correct, but his skills fail to make an impactful film. A little more dedication would have resulted in something called a masterpiece.
What's there ????
1. Some exceptional performances of the cast add and is a plus.
2. The script of the film is outstanding and offers something new to the audience.
3. Released a just a week before Independence Day, '1944' tastes success in originating patriotism.
What's not there ????
1. Poor direction by S Badrinath lets down the story.
2. The characters are penned down, but the writer has failed to make their dialogues look real. The whole conversation in the film seems like melodramatic or resemble the serials telecasted on Doordarshan some 30 years back.
3. Editing is pathetic which also hinders the viewer. 4. Locations could have been researched to make them look like some 60 years back.
Verdict: Choose '1944' only if you want to relish the performances of actors and relive that patriotic feeling in you. Else the flick offers nothing more than a melodrama.
