In many ways “Ship of Theseus” can be termed as an experimental film. It is not just for the uniqueness of its theme, which deals with a combination of issues like identity, justice, beauty, and death; but also for the collection of characters from varied professions and pursuits, each of whom plays important roles in the buildup of the plot.
Plot: The story is about three conscientious personalities from different fields who ultimately link up metaphorically through the central concept of the movie. The first, Aaliya Kamal (Aida El-Kashef) is a visually impaired, celebrated Egyptian photographer who shoots candid images of life in Mumbai on the sheer strength of her intuition and voice instructions. However, after undergoing a corneal transplant for vision restoration, she is displeased as it seems to have affected her creativity.
The second personality Maitreya ( Neeraj Kabi Neeraj is an actor, trainer and director. But as fate would have it, he is diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and needs medication from the same company he had been opposing. He vehemently refuses to compromise on his fight. The last personality is a young Indian stockbroker, Navin ( Sohum Shah Sohum Shah is a Bollywood actor and a producer. However, when he learns that the beneficiary was a Swede he plans to get Shankar his kidney back but is helped back by the dilemma whether Shankar would be better off with compensation rather than get his kidneys back. So how do these three separate strands meet? The answer lies in the commonality of the fact that all three personalities out of necessity have to accept a donated organ, which, in turn, resonates with the allusion made in the title of the film about the Theseus’ paradox propounded by the Greek philosopher Plutarch. This in simple terms asks, if a ship with all its parts is restored is it the same the same ship?
Review: The major credit for the creation of a film of this high level of philosophical content must go to debutant director Anand Gandhi From TV Soap writing to becoming an internationall >> Read More... as he has also had a hand in the plot and screenplay of the film. In fact one has to look really back to see when, if at all, a debutant director made a film of this quality of content in the past. Though most of the actors are unknown to the Indian audience, and some like Aida El Kashef are drawn from other countries, all of them put in brilliant performances to embellish the already superlative thematic content of the film. Neeraj Kabi and Sohum Shah as the monk and the stock broker respectively while displaying their histrionic skills also give enough evidence of being seasoned theater actors.
Verdict: Admittedly the theme for the film is much more to be appreciated and enjoyed at a higher cerebral level, and this may be missed out by the normal run of the mill movie goer. But for the lover of good cinema, this, like vintage wine, is to be rolled over several times and appreciated.
