Muni 2: Kanchana is the second installment in the Muni series written, produced and directed by Raghava Lawrence.

Plot

Raghava is a layback lad who is jobless and enjoys playing cricket. However, he has an irrational fear of ghosts and he comes home before sunset. He exaggerates his fear by sleeping beside his mother and asking her to accompany him to the bathroom which makes everyone in the household annoyed. One day, Raghava and his friends are forced to leave the ground they were playing cricket on and find a new one. They find a rather bizarre playground which is also rumoured to be haunted. Bizarre weather conditions drive them away. When Raghava brings his stumps back he doesn’t notice there’s blood on them as he tries to woo Priya (Lakshmi Rai), his sister-in-law’s sister. What are follows are some paranormal activities at night, prominently a ghost haunting the hallways.

Analysis

Muni 2 is a one-time watch. There is no spine-chilling horror element and some forced comedy. However, it carries an emotionally indulgent story. The graphics and scare tactics used are very common and something we all know. Raghava Lawrence’s attempt to make this movie for a larger mass is successful. There is no doubt the movie isn’t entertaining, but it lacks pace and strong story-telling. The actors have done an amazing job, especially Raghava as he plays a boy haunted by three spirits, a transgender, a mentally retarded boy, and a Hindi-speaking Muslim. The background score just did not cut it for us. The director and the cinematography are fine making it bearable to watch.

Star Performances

The entire movie weighs on the shoulders of Raghava Lawrence. He convinces us that he's afraid of the paranormal activities and the concept of a ghost. His family has also done a great job. Along with Raghava, the antagonist of the movie MLA Shankar (Devan) has also played his character quite well.

What’s there?

If you like Tamil films and are a fan of Raghava we do not need to recommend it to you. If you like light-hearted movie, with no extreme horror element and some stupid comedy Muni 2 is for you. The movie has a strong emotional arc, and that is shown quite well.

What’s not there?

The movie has a good story but not the best execution or story-telling. The lack of major horror elements and unnecessary comedy sucks the charm of a good horror flick.

Verdict

Muni 2 is a one time watch not so scary movie you would enjoy keeping your brains aside. This is a complete entertainer though it has its own shortcoming, Muni 2 is a mass entertainer.
