Times have changed, and Bollywood has moved away from a boy with rich dad falling for the girl with humbler background, and both battling for their love till the inevitable change of heart upstairs. In “Gori Tere Pyar Mein” though that name sounds old fashioned, the romance of the protagonists are not thwarted by any parental hurdles, but by their own diametrically opposed ideological orientations. To that extent, the film puts out something thematically different.
Plot: Though the plot does not try to obviously propound national integration, the two main characters are clearly defined as coming from the South and the North of the country. The male protagonist Sriram Venkat, portrayed by Imran Khan Imran Khan is an Indian film actor, who is famous >> Read More... , hails from Bangalore, and is what in current lingo is referred as a ‘cool dude’. The other node of the romance duo is occupied by Dia, played by Kareena Kapoor, who hails from Delhi and is a determined social worker.
With such vast differences in their attitudes to life, it does not take time for them to fall apart on a periodic basis, though one is kept wondering how in the first place they could fall for each other, unless it was just as a result of pure physical attraction. While Sriram is keener to bag that Audi from his father in return for his managing to buy off a land that his father was targeting, Dia’s time is taken up more in finding out playgrounds for under privileged kids; running orphanages or building bridges in under developed villages. As luck, (or the lack of it), would have it, in every instance Sriram’s acts clash with Dia’s social work projects!
The plot gets exposed to some other female characters including Vasudha ( Shraddha Kapoor Shraddha Kapoor, born on March 3rd, 1989, is a you >> Read More... ) and Joshna (Sachi Maker) that move in and out of the life of our “sociable” hero, notwithstanding his fondness for Dia. Towards the latter part of the film the action shifts from urban surroundings to those of a more rustic nature in the remote village of Jhumli in Gujarat, where Dia is pursuing the building of a bridge to help the local villagers. Realising for the umpteenth time that it is Dia that he loves, Sriram bunks his marriage with Vasudha. After locating her whereabouts, he rushes to the village to be with Dia. The village throws up one more character Latesh Bhai, played by Anupam Kher Anupam Kher is a very popular actor, director, and >> Read More... , who makes up for the loss of a physical villain that was missing so far. Obviously, Latesh has to be given some leeway to ensure sufficient misunderstanding between the two main protagonists. However, on expected lines, all hurdles, ill feelings get sorted out, and our lover duo buries the hatchet and seem reconciled to each other irrespective of their differing ideologies and attitudes. Apart from claiming a difference in the typical love romance theme, there is not much more that director Punit Malhotra A young newcomer in Bollywood in the field of Dire >> Read More... can lay claim to.
The plot suffers from a clear lack of credibility when he tries to bring two characters together when their thoughts and attitudes seem to be planets apart – and he does not even attempt to patch up the ideological difference at the conclusion, although he finally unites them. As a natural fallout, the two lead characters seem somewhat out of sorts, having to portray roles that seem incongruous in their relations. This is especially unfortunate after the success of the pairing of these two actors in their previous joint venture in “ Ek Main Aur Ek Tu Ek Main Aur Ek Tu was a Hindi TV serial which prem >> Read More... ”. Although appearing only in a limited role (which is a pity considering her abilities), Shraddha Kapoor as Vasudha looks and performs well leaving the feeling that perhaps she should have been cast in a longer role. Anupam Kher is quite proficient in his negativity, being the versatile actor that he is. It is also a pity that the musical score of Vishal Sekhar, although containing a number of winning tunes, gets lost due to the weakness of the plot.
Verdict: For those who have seen Malhotra’s earlier “I Hate Luv Stories” this would come as a disappointment, but the lure of a winning lead pair and good cosmetics may somehow sustain the film with audiences.
