Plot
Akshay Kumar plays the role of a chef by the name of Sidhu. Sidhu is not happy with his existing life and consults astrologers, tarot card readers, and fake fakirs to get rid of his dull and drab life. He does so despite his adoptive father Dada's (Mithun) insistence. Sidhu agrees to go to China when he is convinced that he is the reincarnation of the ancient warrior Liu Sheng, by Chinese villagers. However, Sidhu does not know that he's being taken there to help the Chinese village, to get rid of smuggler Hojo (Gordon Liu) and not to be honoured as a hero, as he was told by Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey), a Chinese translator and scam artist.
So Sidhu embarks on his journey to China with Chopstick, who has induced dreams of a fantastic future in him. Along the way, Sidhu meets Sakhi (Deepika Padukone) who is also making the trip from Chandni Chowk to China. Sakhi is legitimately tied to China not only through her father but also economically, as the Indian spokesperson for a Chinese company Tele Shoppers Media (TSM). In India, she is also referred to as “Miss TSM”.Her twin sister Suzy, the Chinese Meow Meow, works for Hojo and does not know that Hojo tried to kill her father, Inspector Chiang (Roger Yuan).
Fortunately, Sidhu initially manages to escape from being beaten by Hojo's men. But finally, Hojo succeed in catching up Sidhu and exposes him as a fraud. Sidhu vows revenge and aims to find that one man who will make him a kung-Fu expert and set the village free. That one man is none other than Inspector Chiang, a Kung-Fu master, who trains Sidhu to fight Hojo.
It was Inspector Chiang’s guidance, Sakhi’s love and most importantly Sidhu’s own faith that encouraged him and gave him hope to set forth to fight Hojo and conquer all.
Analysis
Chandni Chowk to China is a rejuvenating mashup of Bollywood and Asian martial arts epics. It fuses the Kung Fu theatrics from the Far East with the Bollywood song-and-dance numbers. However, Chandni Chowk to China isn't going to appeal to those not already entertained by Bollywood and kung-Fu movie clichés.
Star Performances
Just like in his other movies, Akshay manages a few genuine laughs, this time, around as well. However, his primary achievement in this film is that his character connects completely with the audience. Deepika’s stunt was just remarkable. The supporting artists provide oodles of entertainment, from the terrific Liu to Mithun Chakraborty.
What’s there?
1. The costumes and dancing are great.
2. The scenes set in the Forbidden City Palace and the Great Wall are incredible.In fact, this was the first fight scene permitted to be filmed on the Great Wall.
3. Akshay’s action and one-man-army act definitely deserves a big round of applause.
4. The songs serve as a fresh escape from the otherwise monotonously dull screenplay.
What’s not there?
1. The humour is predominantly cheesy, but there are several genuinely funny moments scattered throughout.
2. Jodi of Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone lacks the spark.
Verdict
Children may love the broad humour while adults will marvel at the eclectic camera angles. The comedy and action make it a true Akshay movie.
