INTRODUCTION:
The remarkable writer-director, Lynn Shelton, brings together an extremely talented cast ensemble (Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt Emily Blunt, also known as Emily Olivia Leah Blunt >> Read More... and Rosemarie DeWitt Bio coming soon... >> Read More... ) in a drama film touching upon the concept of love in a variety of ways.
PLOT:
A year after Mark Duplass loses his brother, he is offered to spend some time with himself to cope with his sufferings at a cabin located on an isolated island by his friend and brother’s ex, Emily Blunt. On reaching, he encounters Rosemarie, Emily’s lesbian sister, who is living there secretly. A night accompanied by drinks leads the two to sleep together. Soon, Emily turns up there as well and opens up to her sister about her sprouting feelings of love for Mark. What happens next is a mix of revelations, lies, manipulations and reconciliations.
STAR PERFORMANCES:
Mark Duplass gains respect by balancing the character of a young man disturbed by his brother’s demise, on the one hand, and being a funny, attractive and charming guy in the conversations that he has with Rosemarie. Although Mark, Emily, as well as Rosemarie, have done an equally exceptional job in the movie, it is Rosemarie who has stolen the hearts of the audience. Her effortless portrayal of a heartbroken lesbian, a deceitful lover, and a loyal sister is what brought her appreciation.
ANALYSIS:
For a movie that has been shot on a bare minimal budget, with a script consisting of seventy pages and having major improvisations, the director (Lynn Shelton) has done quite a commendable job. Owing to the brilliant acting skills of the three main characters, the movie has been successful in keeping the audience interested in watching what happens further. The natural display of human relationships struggling their way out from a complicated situation is the USP of the film.
WHAT’S THERE?
1. The surreal islands give a very realistic feel to the plot.
2. Very natural and realistic portrayal of characters.
3. The film appeals to all the vices and emotions of the audiences. It is very relatable in real life.
4. A great deal of comic relief.
WHAT’S NOT THERE?
1. The sync in accents of verbal language by the sisters, where one has a British one, while the other has an American one (though it is somehow explained in the film).
2. Somewhere or the other, there was a visible struggle by the actors while improvising their characters.
VERDICT:
The film revolves around an unusual yet refreshing story about a ‘love’ triangle that goes wrong. If you’re a fan of love and drama, you can treat your eyes with this must-watch film.
