Analysis
This is the first horror anthology where women directors have taken charge. As this is an anthology there are four stories titled The Box, Birthday Party, Don’t fall, and Her Only Living Son. The first one stars Natalie Brown in the lead as a mother and how her and her children’s lives change after the boy takes a peek in a red gift box. This story is kind of lags there is nothing much in this story. It quickly spells out the mother’s deprivation, but there is not much to look after in this one. The second one stars Melanie Lynskey as a stressed mother who is planning a birthday party for her daughter but she finds her husband in a shocking state and now has to hide it from the oppressive neighbors. This story honestly fails to connect. The jump scares fail to generate any fear. The third story stars Breeda Wool as one of the camping women discovering about some gruesome events. This story is the weakest one, this film has some slimy creatures and you don’t care for the characters because not much time has been spent making them connect to the audience. The fourth story stars Christina Kirk as a single mother making ends meet. She lives in a house in the middle of nowhere with her son but as soon as the son turns 18 he gets to know about some mysterious things about the house and why there is nothing around the house. This film is the best of the four stories. It's more coherent and dark, acting wise too it's the strongest of the lot, a story that is disturbing and has the most clear narration of a mother’s sacrifice. The anthology was trying to showcase the narration of a mother but except the 4th story none of them come close to hitting the spot. XX is an average anthology with only the 4th story that hits the spot.

Verdict
XX is an interesting take on women’s place and her sacrifices. Although every story has moments, all in all, it is a mid-film. You can watch it on a random binge.
