Plot
Deepak (Vinay Virmani), an unemployed doctor, migrates to Canada for work opportunities but is forced to become a taxi driver. He begins illegally treating patients from his cab and falls in love with one of them.
Star performance
Vinay Virmani is a standout in this film; his portrayal is subtle and doesn't go overboard. But does come off as dull. Kunal Nayyar as Tony is a misfire, his character will be hated. It kind of raises the question why he signed this film? Maybe to cater to the Indian audience, or perhaps he wanted to change his image of Raj (The Big Bang Theory) either way this role was not the answer. The rest of the actors are formidable. Some performances feel OTT but what can you expect from a western production?
Analysis
The film has a simple and quite exciting storyline and would be relatable to the NRI audience, especially of Indian/South Asian Descent. But the film also has some questionable plots like everyone knows Canada offers free healthcare but setting up a shop in your car and charging the patients doesn't make sense. As this is a Western production, Stereotypes would be here. India is shown to be a backward cow roaming country, Punjabi people beating everyone, catcalling from a cab in Canada. The film wanted to showcase the struggles of foreign doctors but it takes a 180 degree turn and makes it a mess. The dialogues are cringy especially Kunal Nayyar’s, Vinay Virmani tries but is dull and the other actors are fine. The direction is messy. Writing has barely touched the surface of the medical community. Dr.Cabbie is a stereotyped, underwritten comedy that just comes and goes, and you don’t even care.
