Plot
It's the 1970s, where all that everyone desires is to be upbeat and punk. The movie is based when the punk music kicked in and drove everyone crazy. Based on a short story by Neil Gaiman, How to talk to girls at parties is a story of a young nerd teenage boy, Enn (Alex Sharp) of South London who wants to crush the system and make his name but is also afraid to talk to his school crush. The movie progresses as Enn and his friends accidentally stumble into what seems like art, but is a temporary home of aliens who have come to earth for an inter-galaxy school trip, is where the female protagonist of the film enters, Zan(Elle Fanning) who wants to be more than just a tourist on earth. What happens next?
Analysis
The flick is loosely based on a short story written by Neil Gaiman by the same name. Even with the supporting of Nicole Kidman as Queen Boadicea, the story remains vague and unfocused, the movie dwells too much into the peripheral aspects rather than the relationship between the lead pair. The film goes worse with dreadful CG effects so much that they become a pain to watch. Certain scenes in the movie which are imagined or are supposed to be in a certain way, are shown with the lowest technology available. The only good part about the movie is the extravagant and imaginative costumes. Unlike other Gaiman affiliated productions, How to talk to girls at parties does not provide the necessary edge or fun.
Star Performances
Elle Fanning and Alex Sharp are the lead pairs of this story. They have chemistry, but it remains unfolded throughout. Enn’s friends that are Ethan Lawrence and Abraham Lewis have also done a good job. Queen Boadicea played by Nicole Kidman does not offer much support to the narrative.
What’s there?
How to talk to girls at parties is made for those who like a chick-flick with a twist.
The film manages to produce a 1970s feel but fails miserably to create a whole new world of aliens.
What’s not there?
The movie is highly deficient in good CG effects and a bearable narrative.
Verdict
The movie won’t make you go awe or any other kind of expression. The film fails to encapture the essence of the short story of Neil Gaiman regarding execution and production.
