Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the most powerful film of 2017. It crashes into the audience with such force that you are compelled to sit down and take notice.
Plot
A grieving and raging mother, Mildred Hayes, decides to make use of the three billboards on the road to her home with very stinging words to call out the police department of the town for not doing anything about her daughter’s case. Some seven months ago her daughter was raped and murdered, and the incompetent police did not find the culprit who committed such a heinous crime. After she puts up such billboards that incriminate the Police Chief William Willoughby, she starts receiving hate from the entire town, especially the chief’s partner, Officer Dixon. She goes off the hook taunting the police, the priest, her ex-husband, any friends of the police department and she even goes on to set fire to the Police Department building. The movie ends on a cliffhanger with unexpected allies forming for a joint purpose.
Analysis
Martin McDonagh comes up with a movie so stimulating and provocative that it resonates for a long time after you’ve finished watching it. The film on the surface seems an intrinsically revenge film, but halfway through the movie, it goes to a whole different level. The entire experience of the film is so unique; it captures you so tightly that you wobble when the movie finishes. The mother, who is still mourning, takes out all of her anger and does things that are borderline psychopathic, and on the other hand is the noble and very straight line officer but therein lies the dilemma: who do you support? The movie is not only about the justice, but it takes an abysmal look at the human psychology of grief and anger. It does not even justify the actions of the mother, but lets you take charge of your own opinions. The music weaves into the scenes and helps in ethereally bringing out the flavor of the movie. The movie has undertones of dark comedy, which is surprising considering it deals with the murder and rape scenarios. The screenplay and the cinematography very brilliantly showcase the geniuses of the people working on the movie.
Star Performance
The film belongs to the two extremely flagrant performances delivered by Frances McDormand Frances McDormand was born Frances Louise McDorman >> Read More... and Sam Rockwell Born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California >> Read More... . The vigor with which she enacts Mildred is astounding. She very frankly deserved every bit of that Academy Award for her role. Her stoic, bitchy, icy and very emotionally strong character, who fiercely does whatever it takes to get her daughter justice, is just the kind of performance that we look forward to from McDormand. Rockwell’s portrayal of the brash, racist, momma’s boy who is emotionally stunted also got him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Though Woody Harrelson’s Willoughby has a short role, it is memorable enough for him to get nominated for the Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars.
What’s there?
1) A movie which gives you an out of the world feeling
2) A dark abyss which makes you stare into the film as though you were looking inside at your demons
What’s not there?
1) The movie very strongly portrays Mildred’s hatred of the police, and that shifts attention from the main things.
2) Coarse language and graphic scenes
Verdict
With incinerating performances by the cast and the story that grabs you by the throat, this is one movie that you should not miss.
