Plot

“Blaze” is an autobiographical drama based on the life of country musician Blaze Foley (1949 – 1989). The film is inspired from a memoir written by Sibil Rosen named “Living In the Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze.” The film describes three time periods of Blaze’s life, the first time period is of his love story with Sybil Rosen, the second time period is of his last night on Earth, and the third time period shows the impact of his death on his music, fans, family, and friends. Sybil Rosen was Blaze’s muse, and she was the inspiration behind most of his music, but their relationship was torn apart by Blaze’s music tours and heavy drinking. Blaze spent his last night in a bar in Austin recording a live album. This time period showed how much he had changed without Sybil in his life.

Star Performance

Ben Dickey as Blaze Foley and Alia Shawkat as Sybil Rosen give spectacular performances. Their chemistry is insane and their scenes together are absolute perfection.

Analysis

Ethan Hawke has done well staying true to the roots of Blaze’s life. He has presented his life not merely as a chronicle but as the musical masterpieces he left us with. The film features Foley’s songs as well as a few montage pieces which are absolutely stunning.

What’s There?

• The film features a stellar star cast of Ben Dickey, Alia Shawkat, Josh Hamilton, Charlie Sexton, Lloyd Teddy Jonson Jr., Wyatt Russell, Jenn Lyon, and Ritchie Montgomery

• The film would be a treat for music lovers as it features Blaze’s classics as well as some montage pieces

• The film has stellar performances by Ben Dickey and Alia Shawkat

• The film also shows Foley and Rosen’s love story

• The film does not over-dramatize Foley’s biography

What’s Not There?

• The film slightly overuses the montage pieces but other than that has no major flaws

Verdict

“Blaze” perfectly describes Blaze Foley’s life through his songs, his love, his ups and downs, and the legacy he left behind. The film portrays his love, his friends, and his family without over-dramatizing any aspect. “Blaze” would be a great watch for country music fans and documentary enthusiasts.
