Star Performances
There are three things good about this film: Woody Allen, Woody Allen, and Woody Allen.
His wacky sense of humor, laced with his unconventional take on romance, is exemplified further through this anthology, also a tribute to the liveliness of Rome.
Analysis
‘To Rome with Love’ is an anthology of its kind. Four stories are bound by a common thread: the city of Rome. Through this city, Woody explores a myriad of emotions, from nostalgia to dreams, and even touches upon his favorite subjects of love and adultery.
The film is strictly not for those, who are either super idealistic or have a flair for fast-paced dramas. Despite being less than 2 hours long, this film takes its own sweet time to build a narrative.
Contrary to other anthologies, this film has no story interlinked with the other, except for the city of Rome being a common factor. Each story unconventionally explores various emotions.
Of the four stories, the one with Roberto Benigni is both philosophical as well as a satire on modern times, where mediocrity is rewarded. The way he experiences sudden fame before the ever-opportunistic journalists move on to the next target is both quirky and hard-hitting.
The Woody Allen segment, where he plays the role of an opera director, is also brilliant. However, it is the sequence involving a couple on honeymoon, that takes the case, and shows how easily people move on in relationships, given an opportunity. Woody spares none in this unique social commentary, generously laced with dark humor, as well as shades of fantasy.
One of the few problems of this anthology is the presence of too many subplots and the not-so-smooth transition of many sequences. However, if you are ready to ignore it, you might find ‘To Rome with Love’ to be not that bad after all.

Verdict
‘To Rome with Love’ is a film that not many would find easy to digest. However, if you have a knack for the unconventional, you can opt for this unique anthology.
