Analysis
Imagine a movie with no dialogues, no thrills, and no over the top elements. Yet, it is so powerful that you are extremely emotional by the time the movie ends.
‘Robot Dreams’ is precisely that movie. Very few people know that this was the director’s dream project, but it took almost 13 years to bring this project to life. Yet, Pablo Berger was not the one to give up easily.
The story is about a lonely dog who lives in Manhattan. He is so lonely that when he sees an ad for a robot, he orders it immediately. Not many would realize the metaphor behind this move, but Pablo has done a brilliant job in this direction. Although this movie may not be as tear jerking as ‘Hachiko’, it does follow the same template. Maybe the effort of 13 years did not go down the drain.
The messaging in this movie is outstanding. With the simplest of images, the director tells us some of the most important lessons of life, and in no instance does he go overboard. There is also a smart use of electronic music in this movie, and those who loved the music of late 80s and 90s will not be disappointed at all. In fact, the scenes where the dog and the robot miss each other are some of the purest scenes that must not be missed at all.
While there are some flaws, they are few and far in between. Thanks to editor Fernando Franco, nowhere do you feel bored or disappointed with the movie. Even Alfonso de Vilallonga did an effective job with the music of this movie.
