Plot
Following a middling response to two of his successive novels, crime writer Ellison Oswalt decides to write a biography about some mysterious killings. However, the more he researches about the case, the more he realizes what danger he is putting his family into. Can Ellison get out of trouble before it is too late?
Star Performances
Writers Scott Derrickson and C Robert Cargill can pat their backs for creating an absolute stunner out of a rather cliched trope.
As actors, Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, and Clare Foley are standout performers. Clare Foley’s simple, but sinister appearance is sure to make even the most stone-hearted jump up in horror!
Analysis
A horror film that makes you shiver at the mention of it. This is a dream only a few can afford. However, based on his own experience, writer C Robert Cargill convinced Scott Derrickson to make a horror film that makes you scream your heart out! But then, we forget that this is the same Scott Derrickson, who created some underrated gems like ‘Hellraiser’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ as well.
Never could anybody imagine that a nightmare would create such a masterpiece like this. ‘Sinister’ does not have a path-breaking script in its kitty. Yet, it sends shivers down your spine. The best part, it does not need the gore to do the trick. All it needs are some old, Super 8 cameras, and seemingly naïve children, who do the dirty job. Yes, that is what the makers employed to make the supernatural drama convincing, and super scary! If you do not leave the hall without feeling jittery, you haven’t seen the film at all!
‘Sinister’ is a horror film that is both creepy and disturbing. Yes, this film uses some of the regular tropes, including the jump scares. However, it focuses more on the psychology of the characters, rather than the traditional methods. The usage of Super 8 cameras and the incidents recorded in the same is a technique that may remind some of ‘Paranormal Activity’. However, ‘Sinister’ takes that a notch higher, making some viewers run for cover!

‘Sinister’ is one horror film that none expected to sign up for. It starts like a normal investigative thriller, but the real horror creeps up slowly. By the time you grasp the reality, ‘Sinister’ has the viewers in its grip, both literally and figuratively. If you’re a fan of authentic horror films, just go and watch this!
