Plot
A psycho killer and kidnapper, named "The Grabber," kidnaps teenagers and kills Finney, a young boy who lives with his sister Gwen and his drunken father, who beats them frequently. When Finney is kidnapped by Grabber while helping him pick up his things, Grabber takes him to a soundproof basement where he and his brother live, but his brother has no idea that he is a kidnapper and murderer, although he does not know that there is a basement in his own house. Finney is assisted in her dream by other victims of Grabber who are now dead with the help of the "black phone" What happens next? Is Finney alive? What happens to the "Grabber?" The film revolves around these questions.
Star Performance
Ethan Hawke as "The Grabber" certainly impresses with his acting skills as he looks sinister with his masks and gestures, but he is a bit lacking in expressing himself as a psycho. Mason Thames, as Finney portrays his character well, is shy and scared in the first half and brave and courageous in the second. The transition was so smooth, and Mason Thames played the character or role of Finney incredibly well.
Analysis
This film is another horror thriller from Scott Derickson after Sinister traumatised people for days. This film is not particularly scary, but the sudden appearance and calls of the victims' ghosts send a chill down your spine. Grabber and his mask are certainly scary, but it would have been better if his character was creepier and more gruesome, and his psychotic nature could have been better portrayed. The direction, cinematography, and imagery are very good; the script is well written, and the screenplay is also good, but the film could have been scarier if Grabber's character and his past had been better expressed and portrayed. Grabber's character is not described in detail, as we do not know why Grabber became a psycho killer. The ending of the film could be more suspenseful, and various aspects such as Gwen's dreams and the appearance of ghosts of the victims could be depicted in more detail, but all these things, such as the acting skills of the actors, a narrative that captivates you and keeps you guessing what will happen next, dark grey imagery and atmosphere, and the development of the characters, make the film worth watching.

Verdict
A well-directed, suspenseful psychological thriller worth watching that captivates but does not scare you too much.
