Plot

The story starts in a small town in the Hudson Valley, with Susan Carpenter, a restaurant server and an ambitious children’s book creator. She is the sole provider of a eleven years old brilliant boy, Henry Carpenter, and his younger sibling Peter Carpenter. Henry has built up an extensive amount of personal savings for his family by leveraging his analytical skills and investing in adequate market stocks. Henry has also constructed Rube Goldberg machines in their treehouse, to protect and fight against Peter’s bully at school. One night Henry caught a sight when his neighbor Christina, who is also his classmate was being abused by her stepfather. Henry immediately thought of standing against the injustice and punishing Christina’s stepfather, Glenn. Glenn was the local commissioner of police and had a significant influence. After failing with all his plans, Henry decides to take his school principal, Janice Wilder’s help to file a complaint against Glenn. But Janice declines to help him because Glenn has a lot of connections, so it is hard to get him punished without any substantial evidence. Will Glenn ever be punished? The rest of the story talks about it.

Star Performance

Naomi Watts, Jacob Tremblay, and Jaeden Martell’s performances were extraordinary, showing real and profound emotions in the respective characters they played. The director has paid close attention to every detail of the movie, which makes the creation even more realistic. Overall, the cast is spectacular, direction is good with an ardent and passionate plot.

Analysis

The Book of Henry surprises you with many unexpected emotional and gripping events planted in its storyline. The relationship between the two brothers and the mother is charismatic and hard to find. The child character Henry is brave and talented enough to fight his problems himself, despite being on the death bed, he is more concerned about his friend and her safety. The movie is not among the ones that can leave you surprised or make you experience something out of the box, but it can indeed teach you much-needed humanity, sympathy, and compassion. Altogether, it is an intelligent, carefully crafted, nearly flawless emotional drama story.

What’s There?

  • Powerful and gripping narrative

What’s Not There?

  • The plot may turn out boring and non-happening to some viewers.

Verdict

It is one of those well-directed and written feel-good movies which is capable of making you cry straight for hours. The story can directly win your heart with its simplistic and creative storyline.
