Plot
Jane, with her husband “Ham” Hammond, and her daughter, Katie, who is five years old, lived in an isolated house. One day, Ham returns home with bullet wounds all over his body. Ham tells Jane that the Bishop boys (a group of criminals) are coming up for him.
Jane takes her daughter to a woman for her daughter’s safety and leaves her there. Jane then goes to Dan Frost (her ex- fiancé), and asks for his help to protect her family. But Dan refuses to help her.
Jane rides to the town to buy weapons and find help to save her family. But, while coming back, she gets caught by one of the men of the Bishop gang. He threatens her at gunpoint and asks her to take him to her house, to Ham. But Dan saves Jane from him, Jane shoots the man and leaves the body there. Dan rides with Jane to her house. At home, Dan sees that Ham is alive, but he is very weak. This changes Dan’s mind, and he agrees to help Jane and her family. And they start planning against Bishop gang’s expected attacks.
Bishop and his men set out to find Jane and Ham. One of his men reaches Jane’s house and recognizes her, but before he could do anything, Dan kills him and buries him. Dan digs a trench in Jane’s Garden and fills it with bottles of kerosene, containers of nails, and glasses.
In a flashback, it is shown that Jane and Dan were engaged once. Dan enlisted to fight in the American Civil War, was caught by the enemies, and was thrown into prison for years. Finally, when he returns, he gets to know Jane had left. He travelled from town to town to find Jane. At last, he gets to know that she moved on a wagon train that was led by John Bishop. Dan meets Bishop and asks him about Jane. Bishop tells him that Jane ran away with Ham. Bishop offers help to find Jane and Ham, but Dan refuses. He sets out alone to find his love. Finally, Dan finds Jane but it is too late now, Jane had already married Ham and they also have a child. Dan realises he has lost Jane forever, and leaves.
Later, Jane tells her side of the story to Dan. After Dan joined army and went for fight in the American Civil War, Jane discovers she is pregnant with his child. Jane waited and waited for years, but when he did not come or write to her. She assumed he got killed in the war. Jane decided to take her daughter Mary away from the town. And move to the west on the Bishop train with other helpless ladies like her. After some time, the ladies get to know that Bishop is planning to start a brothel and force them into the profession of prostitution.
Ham, who has started liking Jane during the journey, tells Bishop that he wanted to marry Jane. But Bishop refuses, saying that she and the other women are his “property.”
Later, Ham finds that Jane and her daughter are missing; he starts searching for Mary and ends up finding a child’s boot floating in the river, and he assumes Mary is dead. He visits the Brothel were Jane is forced to work and rescues her, he tells her that Mary is dead.
Back into present, at night the Bishop gang attacks Jane’s house and starts firing. Dan fires into the trench, which he had filled with bottles of kerosene. Because of which many of the gang members got killed, but some of them escaped. Jane and Dan tried to save Ham, but he did because of too much strain.
They continue to fight with the remaining members of the gang. At last only Bishop stays alive, all the members died in the fight.
Bishop was about to kill Dan, but Jane comes for his rescue and points her gun on Bishop. To persuade Jane to not to kill him, he spills the truth that, Mary whom she thought was dead, is alive. Jane shoots Bishop many times, at last he reveals that Mary is at the Brothel. Jane kills him.
Jane and Dan ride to the Brothel, where they find Mary working as a waitress. They take her from there. All five of them, Jane, Dan, Mary, and Katie happily lived together after as a family.
Star performance
Natalie Portman, as Jane, is the female lead of the film. Portman gave an excellent performance. She beautifully conveys the transformation of Jane, from a simple girl to a frontierswoman, to protect her family.
Joel Edgerton, as Dan, gave a powerful performance. His expressions were mind-blowing.
Portman and Edgerton’s chemistry on-screen is absolutely marvelous.
Ewan McGregor, as Bishop, is the villain of the story. He did complete justice to his character, Bishop, the cruel gangster. He is successful in making people hate him as a villain.
All the other actors did a great job and portrayed their characters excellently.
Analysis
Jane Got a Gun is a story of a woman protecting her family from a gang “ The Bishop Boys. ”
This film is completely different from other action films with a female lead. The film doesn’t show a women with impossible strength and superpowers destroying everything coming in her path, but instead we see how Jane ( female lead) transformed from a sweet girl to a strong woman to protect her family.
The ending of the film is satisfying. The fight sequence between the Bishop gang and Jane and Dan gives goosebumps.
The director of the film is. He did a marvelous job.
The film offers beautiful scenes of landscapes and Barren land. The soundtrack and songs of the film are fantastic.
It is an action-packed film filled with plenty of romance and suspense.

Jane Got a Gun is a Western movie. An action film, which is full of romance and suspense as well. The movie is worth watching. See it.
