So you’re sitting in front of your mobile/laptop/computer screen and reading this review. The title of this movie gives you a vague idea of what this film is about and you eventually start questioning the quotient of happiness in your life. Hector and the Search for Happiness directed by Peter Chelsom answers these questions to an extent if not fully.
Plot:
Hector ( Simon Pegg Simon Pegg is an English actor, producer, screenwr >> Read More... ) is a regular psychiatrist who is exhausted of his mundane life. He lives with his girlfriend Clara ( Rosamund Pike She’s known to be magnificent in portraying differ >> Read More... ) who works at a pharmaceutical company and has a strange boss who considers one of her achievements as not taking a ‘maternity leave.' Hector is leading a life that one would consider normal.
He has sudden flashes that get him to thinking whether or not he may be a fraud since his advice hasn’t transformed anybody’s life. Like we all have a fantasy of packing our bags and eloping somewhere (If only we had the will and money to do so), very similarly Hector, bored of his monotonous life packs his bag and decides to go to China, Why China, out of all places? We have no clue. Hector maintains a diary where he scribbles down realizations accompanied with a drawing that gets animated at times.
On his way to China, Hector meets Edward, who is introduced to us as a wealthy businessman who is generous enough to show our Dear friend Hector around Shanghai, take him to expensive pubs, etc. In one of the pubs, Hector happens to meet Ying Li (Ming Zhao) and starts liking her looks and voluptuous body.
After that, Hector travels another place where he meets Tibetian Monks. After this, you may think that Pegg just needed a paid vacation and hence agreed to do the movie. He does a couple of stints after that traveling to Africa, LA, etc. which include a couple of Skype calls with his girlfriend Clara, which don’t go too well. Well, all’s well that ends well is the motto of this movie.
Verdict:
If you expect to find the true meaning of happiness at the end of this movie, you are going to be left disappointed. But well, If you want to roam around China, Africa, and LA at the comfort of your home, then this movie should do the needful.
