A loner, who lives and raises his children away from the prying eyes of the human population in pure isolation, tries to reinvigorate into society life.

Plot: Ben Cash is one disappointed and defeated person. His wife suffers from bipolar disorder and is an institution for her treatment. They have six children who Ben wants to keep away from the chaotic, ungrateful, and selfish civilization. He raises his children single handed teaching them everything from quantum physics to literature, everything, in the forest of the Pacific Northwest. After some years, Ben comes to know that his wife, who was undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder, had committed suicide.

Ben decides that it is time for his children to accommodate themselves into the society where they actually belong and takes them on a road trip to Mexico for their mother’s funeral. Ben’s father in law is against him seeing his wife for the last time and also threatens to get him arrested. Though Ben reaches the funeral, but various incidents there force Ben to reconsider and ponder upon the upbringing and future of his children.

Analysis: Director Matt Ross brings about a movie where the unconventional ways of raising children is the main theme. Viggo Mortensen He is a talented actor, musician, photographer, pa >> Read More... steals the show and the film centers around a strong, independent father and his six children who create a charming family atmosphere away from the hustle bustle of materialistic urban life. ‘ Captain Fantastic Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ breaks from the conventional family ties and brings out the story of a father’s unending love and a husband’s devotion towards the last wish of his sick and dead wife. The theme that man can peacefully co-exist with nature is brought out.

Star Performances: Vingoo Mortensen is the star of the show, it can be said that this particular role of Ben Cash was framed for him and him alone. From being the strict adult to the extremely loving, and caring father, Vingoo portrays the stern and soft perfectly. The best part of the movie is probably Vingoo’s effort. The children, Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks, Charlie Shotwell, Samantha Isler, Mackay, Annalise Basso, all put up a great show and deliver brilliant performances to show a charismatic family.

What’s There?

1. The screenplay and editing by the talented Stephane Fontaine, and Joseph King is commendable and add flavor to the film.

2. The director has done amazing work and apart from the research conducted has added his personal touch to the costumes, accents so that the movie is most realistic.

3. Two diverse ends of the spectrum are displayed by the main character, on one hand, is the caring, affectionate father who wants to protect his children from the prying eyes of the society, and on the other side, is the father       who is guilty of keeping his children away from the privileges of their right and keeping them away from the society.

4. The script is beautifully framed and will keep the audience engaged.

What’s Not There? The music is not at all good, it gives a sour taste to an otherwise perfect movie. There are few strings left loose which create a little confusion in the story.

Verdict: ‘Captain Fantastic’ recognizes the unconventional methods of family ties. It shows that there is more to the world than just school and books. The audience should surely go for this movie and are sure to leave the theater with happy faces and a warm feeling in their hearts.
