Plot

The film follows Annie and her family. Annie, played by Toni Collette, is a miniature artist, her husband, Steve, played by Gabriel Byrne, is a psychiatrist, and they have two children together, their elder son Peter, played by Alex Wolff,  is sixteen, and their daughter Charlie, played by Milly Shapiro is thirteen. After Annie’s mother Ellen’s death, the family is surprised to see that hordes of people are in attendance as Ellen had isolated herself from her family and came around only after Charlie was born. Annie went to a support group to help deal with the loss of her mother. When Peter is invited to a party, Annie makes him take Charlie with him. They meet an accident, and Charlie is beheaded by a pole. Annie discovered Charlie’s body in the car the next day, and Annie blamed Peter for Charlie’s death. Joan, Ellen’s friend from support group, played by Ann Dowd told Annie to hold a séance to talk to Charlie. During the séance, eerie things happen, and Annie is briefly possessed by Charlie’s spirit. The film follows Annie as she tries to deal with the loss of her mother and daughter, and her daughter’s vengeful spirit and the revelations she makes about her mother.

Star Performance

The entire cast performs very well. Toni Collette delivers a stellar performance as Annie. She perfectly portrays Annie’s raw emotions, her struggles, sorrow, and her eventual descent into madness.

Analysis

“Hereditary” is a horror film filled with bold and gore. The first half of the film builds up the horror and the suspense, while the second half, and especially the ending feels absolutely surreal, and would sound absurd if one tried to put it into words. Still, the script works out.

What’s There?

• Stellar performance by Toni Collette

• The film has a plethora of horror scenes, and does not shy away from incorporating blood and gore.

• The cinematography and background score increase the impact of the horror element in the film

What’s Not There?

• The ending feels surreal and disappointing

Verdict

“Hereditary” features a solid concept and stellar performances. The film’s horror is capable of shaking the viewers to their core, although the ending feels drab. So, the film would be a good watch for horror enthusiasts.
