Before I Wake has a premise that is quite new to its genre. Now let’s see whether the movie really keeps us awake through the time.

Plot

But as fate would have it the son dies by falling in a bathtub. The couple visibly wants solace from this adopted child.

But the twist in the story comes when Tremblay, who is a very cute and amiable child, is frightened to the hilt to fall asleep. In fact, his fear is such that he was tightly holding a shoebox during his first ever entry into his new house. What is in the box? It is nothing but stimulants to keep him awake through the night.

Some of the dreams of this cute kid are good while some are horrendous nightmares. So Tremblay is dead scared of falling asleep since his nightmares too come to life. What is the repercussion of the dreams? Watch the movie to unravel this question.

Star Performances

Jacob Tremblay, who was earlier seen in the Oscar-winning Room, is the show stealer, and he has done full justice to his role. Kate Bosworth has a meaty role, and she does quite a good job. However, she could have have been more expressive in the scenes that invoke fear. Thomas Jane has done a neat job as the gentle father.

Analysis

Mike Flanagan, the director of the movie, though handling a good premise, fails to give the required effect as the movie proceeds. However, he has also given a good understanding of the perplexed child’s mind.

What’s there?

The premise of Before I Wake is the perfect fodder for a fan of the horror genre.
Some of the scenes where Tremblay and Jane shares screen space is heart-touching.
The VFX is commendable.
The ghost in the movie (watch it to know) is something that we are not used to.
