Orion and the Dark is a comedy-adventure animated movie released by Netflix, directed by Sean Charmatz, and produced by Peter McCown. Jacob Trembley voices the character of Orion, an 11-year-old boy, with a long list of fears, and Colin Hanks Colin Hanks is American actor who is known for his >> Read More... as adult Orion. Paul Walter Hauser voiced Dark, who becomes the friend of Orion as the story proceeds. Rob Delaney voiced Orion’s dad, Nat Faxon as Insomnia, Natasia Demetriou as sleep, Ike Barinholtz as light, Aparna Nancherla as quiet, and Werner Herzog as the Narrator.

Plot

The story opens in 1995 in Philadelphia, a city in the U.S. Orion, an 11-year-old boy journals his endless lists of fears and phobias, he has also written down his fear of getting rejected by his school crush. When the teacher asks him to go on a trip, he refuses as he is afraid of going on a school trip but then his crush from the school asks him to go on the trip but he again refuses as his fear is not allowing him to. Orion’s biggest fear was darkness, he could not even sleep in the dark so his parents demanded him to sleep in the dark to overcome his fear. After his parents leave him in the dark room alone, Orion tries a lot not to be afraid but, as the darkness increases, his fear increases. The rest of the story revolves around how darkness confronts him and helps him overcome his fear.

Star Performance

"Orion and the Dark" stands out with its unconventional storytelling and distinctive animation, all the credits go to the voice-over artists who truly blended their voice with respective characters. The unique animation style adds a layer of creativity, making the film visually distinct. The character designs are amazing and the movie seems complete with the combined efforts of the artists and the filmmakers. However, the story writing could have been less complicated, as it targeted to influence children.

Analysis

Orion and the Dark is a fun children's fable built on a classic narrative that makes its message clear and appeals to audiences of all ages. The core theme of overcoming fears, including the fear of the dark and various insecurities, is artfully depicted through a bedtime story told across two generations. However, the complexity of the storyline might pose a challenge for younger viewers to grasp fully. On the other hand, the movie delivers a profound lesson that resonates with children and adults. The animation is pretty solid with some good colours and models. I love how parents were characterized in the story. They are loving, supportive, and understanding. However, the writing and the way of putting the story together could be a little better.

What’s There?

• Good animations.

• Making children aware and motivating teenager’s insecurities, anxieties, and worries.

What’s Not There?

• No character development.

Verdict

The film has a unique animation style that adds a layer of creativity, making the film visually distinct. The plot was a little loose in the middle but the filmmakers eventually pulled it off. Altogether, it is a decent movie and can be given a shot.
