CAST & CREW
his movie is about organized crime, family drama, performed by Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain, Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo, Albert Brooks & Catalina Sandino Moreno. The movie is written & directed by J.C.Chandor.
This movie was set in New York in 1981. This year is considered as the most perilous year in the city’s history. Here, the crime was increasing. Abel Morales is expanding his father’s small Oil Company with his business partner & wife Anna, whose father is a gangster. Abel is willing to take forward his business in a legitimate fashion but as he starts doing that his troubles start increasing. Abel is aware of his competitor's catching bigger share in the market. Also, robbers keep attacking his drivers & steals fuel, which they sell it in a black market. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Lawrence starts investigating Abel’s accounting practices, which leads Abel to decide on his purchase of land in three days. Abel & Anna have to close the land deal before everything falls apart. So, this is the story of their efforts to keep their American dreams alive.\
Abel’s character played by Oscar Isaac is a confident businessman. He made us feel the despair & difficulties Abel faces. He gets to know at the end that every man has to stand for himself & nobody will come up for his help. Chastain plays Anna’s character. She is brilliant & proves her talent as a strong, smart Abel’s business partner. Their chemistry is too good.
The title of this movie is unsuitable; it is not about violence, but layers of violence entrepreneurs experienced to start their business. At the end of the movie, success comes to those who are smart enough to tackle all problems with a calculative mind. This movie is visually dark & maintained feel of American 70’s movies. They have used earthy as well as dirty yellow colors to get this feel. It feels like a memorial service they are giving to male heroes, who were all over America at that time. It’s a good movie but tries too hard to get into 70’s macho movies. All characters are trapped in gray areas, which are hard to judge what’s wrong and right. Director couldn’t achieve same innovatory freedom like other filmmakers, who made gangster thrillers.
Excellent casting, looks & performances as well as an apt use of locations in New York.
