His birth name is Balasubramaniam. Bhramananda Paradesiyar named him “Pithukuli” and Swami Ramadas named him Murugadoss, which means the devotee of Lord Muruga. He travelled various countries like Sri Lanka, the United States of America, Mauritius, Nepal, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia and conducted numerous concerts. Murugadoss is well versed in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and English. He was also honored with “Kalaimamani” and “Sangeetha Samrat.” He was also awarded the Tyagaraja Award, which is considered as a great honor for any vocalists. Murugadoss lost his left eye sight in 1936, as the British police beat him cruelly for participating in the Freedom struggle.
