She is the daughter of late DMK MLA Thangapandian and the sister of former Minister Thangam Thennarasu. Born as Sumathi, she changed her name to Thamizhachi due to the love for Tamil. She is married to an IPS officer Chandrasekhar and has two daughters. Thamizhachi will be contesting in South Chennai.
