Jolla, a well-known Mobile OS maker, is finally back and presented a small black box at the MWC 2024. The box is intended to tap into the hype of generative AI and shows that innovation in the mobile world is still evolving.
The device is a private cloud/AI router, allowing users to access their data and perform AI queries. It is similar to the personal server concept revolving in privacy circles for many years, but this device-in-the-making was reformed for the generative AI era.
Talks during the MWC 2024 show that Jolla is attempting to focus directly on privacy and security since the assistive data processing will transpire on the AI device itself. A report says running AI locally on the phone is not a good idea since it is impossible to secure it enough, especially in this AI era where privacy is paramount. Still, co-founder Antti Saarnio says this device will hold all the private information, and run AI. All the data will be safe, and no one except the owner can access it.
The sample picture above bears the name Jolla Mind², which was described as an adaptive digital assistant. The target customers are more likely to be Android users since it can provide a way to tap into the utility of advanced AI without revealing all their personal information to Google or other non-trusted 3rd party apps.
