Instagram is working on a new feature called Friend Map, which lets users find their friends on a map. Software developer Alessandro Paluzzi discovered Friend Map before the app was announced. In the photos he shared on X and Threads, it appears that the app will allow users to select whose friends they will allow to see their location or choose to go into ‘Ghost mode’ if they want to hide their location from their Instagram friends. He added that their location is fully encrypted.
This possible addition aims to give the Instagram platform a new layer of connectivity. However, it is known that in every innovation comes a new set of challenges and opportunities, so questions about the privacy and security of this feature come to the forefront.
Friend Map is similar to Snap’s Snap Map. It allows the users to leave notes on the map to let their friends know their locations. However, this app is still in progress, and there’s no official statement if Instagram will push through and make it to the actual Instagram app. For now, this new feature is a captivating glimpse into the future of digital connectivity.
