His father Harihar is a dreamer and unable to meet financial needs; even though they belong to the highest caste,i.e., Brahmins, they are incapable of maintaining their respect in Indian society. Pather Panchali’s international success made Satyajit create its sequel to Apu’s narrative. This movie progresses with the physical, mental, and moralistic growth of the main character Apu. This story is of a stubborn and snobbish man called Huzur Biswambhar Roy, a landlord living in a crumbling palace (representing his crumbling wealth) who is reluctant to do anything for himself. Biswambhar enjoys listening to songs in his specially allocated, well-decorated Music Room. The music room’s sole purpose is to show off his wealth and superiority complex. Towards the end, Biswambhar ruins himself for his fake social respect. This movie gives the moral of always being humble and not indulging ourselves in showing off.

5. Devi (The Goddess), 1960

This movie features the superstar of all times, Sharmila Tagore as the main lead. In this movie, Satyajit explores the themes of fanaticism. In a rural setting of 19th century Bengal, a landlord believes that his daughter-in-law (Sharmila Tagore) is the embodiment of the goddess Kali. His belief changes her life. The turn of events leads to the destruction of a typical family household, and her life becomes a tragedy. Through this film, Satyajit highlights the state of Indian women; and the lack of control women have over their own lives.

6. Abhijan (The Expedition), 1962

Abhijan movie is appreciated as its main lead is both an optimistic and pessimistic character. Narsingh, played by Soumitra Chatterjee, is a hot-headed taxi driver who is too proud of his Rajput caste. Towards the end, we can see that he becomes lawless, which he hated earlier; he indulges in smuggling and rapes a village girl, Gulabi. Charulata is a young woman who loves poems, literature, and culture, while her husband, Bhupati is a political newspaper publisher. They are incompatible, and Charulata falls in love with the cousin of Bhupati, Amal. The companionship of Amal helps Charulata flourish in writing poetry.
