10 Bollywood Stars Who Refused Awards

Awards are given to appreciate one’s talents, and cine world is one industry wherein talents are frequently recognized. But for some reasons, certain actors and actresses have refused awards. Here is a list of Bollywood’s top 10 celebrities who have declined awards.

1. Sonu Nigam

Who can forget the soulful rendering Sandeshen Aata Hain of Sonu Nigam in the movie Border? Sonu was adjudged the Best Singer in Film Fare Awards of 1997, and he was asked to felicitate the stage. However, as humble as he was, Sonu went to the stage but declined to receive the award. The reason he told for this is that he and Roop Kumar Rathod together sang the song and how could the judges give for him alone.

2. Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar might have received her first Filmfare Award without hesitation, but she refused it at the first instance when she found that the idol was the shape of a woman, and was not dressed. Eventually, the organizers dressed the award with a hanky and gave it to the ace singer. As years passed by, Lata did a noble gesture by declining to receive any more awards since she was the reigning queen till 1966. She did this to foster new talents.

3. Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar did a sweet gesture by refusing the Popular Actor award given to him by Screen Awards and referring that to Aamir Khan for his brilliant performance in Ghajini. But again, as the world knows, Aamir is not too keen on such awards, and he ultimately sent a text to Twinkle stating that it was a sweet gesture from Akshay. Finally, the organizers decided to send the award (since it had his name engraved on it) to Akshay.

4. Kumar Sanu

Kumar Sanu is a talented singer, and his talent is recognized continuously; he got back-to-back 5 Film Fare Awards. But since he felt that other singers too should get a chance he declined to receive further awards.

5. Aamir Khan

It is a well-known fact that Aamir Khan has always been elusive from award functions. In fact, he candidly criticizes the Indian award functions and the authenticity of them. It is believed that, except National Awards, Aamir doesn’t involve himself in any other award show.

6. Vyjayanthimala

Vyjayanthimala was adjudged the Best Supporting Actress in the Film Fare Awards as she felt that she had the main role in the film compared to Suchitra Sen.

7. Suchitra Sen

Suchitra Sen had called it quits to films in 1978 and since then she was quite reclusive. She dedicated her time to Ramakrishna Mission. In 2005, she was selected for a high civilian award but Suchitra humbly put forth that she would receive the award if it is given privately in Rashtrapathi Bhavan. However, the award was not given to her later owing to the government’s disapproval.

8. Shashi Kapoor

Can any refuse to receive the coveted National Award? Well, Shashi Kapoor did that. As of now he is the only actor who has declined National Award. This was for the 1961 movie Dharam Putra. He humbly justifies his gesture by telling that he that his performance was deserving an award. However, he garnered the National Award in 1986 for New Delhi Times.

9. Reena Roy

Here is another supporting actress award denial. Reena Kapoor was adjudged the Best Supporting Actress for her movie Apnanan but eventually she declined it stating that when she was the main actress in the movie what is the need for supporting actress award.

10. Prithviraj Kapoor

Prithviraj Kapoor was chosen the Best Supporting Actor for the magnum opus movie Mughal-E-Azham. But he angrily refused the award stating that when he performed the title role how could he be considered as a supporting actor.
